Jamie Pierre – Death of a Legend

As you have probably heard, sadly Jamie Pierre was tragically killed last month in an avalanche whilst skiing in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah.   He was 38 years old.

Matthew Jamison “Jamie” Pierre was a professional free skier and wildly known for his world-record cliff jump of 255 feet (78 m) at the Grand Targhee Resort in Wyoming.   Jamie had featured in many of the best skiing movies – always pushing the boundaries of what was possible on two planks.

Ironically it has been suggested Jamie was snowboarding rather than skiing.   According to the Utah Avalanche Center, Pierre and a friend left the closed Alta Ski Area and continued to Snowbird Resort via Mount Baldy to access the Peruvian Cirque and the Gad Valley. A statement posted on its website, stated “With the partner watching, the victim dropped into the slope, immediately triggering the slide. He was carried hundreds of feet through steep rocky terrain and reportedly went over a small cliff band and came to a stop only partially buried.”

Whilst the resort had not yet opened for the season and with hazardous conditions following a storm, Jamie was obviously fully aware of the risks.    The only consolation being he died doing something he loved.
