In March 2012 you have the opportunity to race the across the oldest and deepest lake in Siberia and take on the World’s finest adventure athletes – are you ready for the challenge?
The majestic Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world and holds 20% of the world’s fresh water – with an average depth of 750m. The lake freezes over between January and May each year.
The race will offer 2 race distances, a 155 mile sprint or 379 mile marathon. Race categories include kite skiing, mountain biking, cross country skiing, running, walking and skating or any combination of these – whatever you think you can manage!
The race is being organised by Extreme World Races (EWR). Tony Martin the CEO says “Our Siberian Black Ice Race is a challenge that can break even the toughest of the tough – the Marathon des Sables is a walk in the park compared to this.”
To compete, you must be self-sufficient on the ice with temperatures as low as -40 degrees C and winds of up to 200km/h
Who are Extreme World Races?
Founded by Tony Martin in 2003 an ex-soldier, adventurer and entrepreneur, Extreme World Races is famous around the world for organising races at the extremes of human performance, in the most hostile environments on the planet.
EWR are prolific in the media and some of their successes include BBC Top Gear’s legendary Polar Challenge, James Cracknells and Ben Fogles On Thin Ice challenge and more recently Helen Skelton with her Polar challenge.
How much is race entry?
Places are now very limited, at the last count there were 25 places available. A special rate of £1,250.00 is currently on offer. Flights, VISAs and accommodation are not included at this price. Closing date for final received payment is 31 January 2012. So if your interested – get your skates on!

Starting in the ancient Cossack city of Irkutsk racers will have an incredible chance to experience this unique chance of racing on top of the black ice in Sibera. For Marathon entrants once finished, you will have the opportunity to complete your Siberian experience with a memorable journey on the legendary Trans-Siberian Express – the longest and most iconic rail journey in the world.
Competitors are provided with fully qualified experts and support teams in the field, including doctors, psychologists, nutritionists, extreme condition logistical experts, engineers, drivers and expert physiological and psychological training teams.
